ABOUT THE 2016 BMW 750I XDRIVE
The 2016 BMW 750i xDrive is the V8 version of the sixth-generation 7 Series (G12), sold in North America only in long-wheelbase form despite the absence of the “L” in its name. Its twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 produces 445 hp and 480 lb-ft (650 Nm), with xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic.
An all-new 7 Series
2016 was the launch year of the G11/G12 generation. Its Carbon Core body structure combines carbon-fibre reinforced plastic with high-strength steel and aluminium to reduce weight. New technology included gesture control for the iDrive system, the touchscreen Display Key, a two-axle air suspension and an optional Executive Lounge rear-seat package. The wheelbase is 3,210 mm, and the 750i initially sat at the top of the range alongside the six-cylinder 740i.
Comfort and practicality
The long wheelbase provides limousine-like rear legroom, and the rear seats can be specified with massage, ventilation and a reclining function. The boot is large and well shaped, and the xDrive system suits buyers in snowy climates.
Buying one today
Early examples of a new generation can have more software and electronics updates outstanding, so check that the car has had its dealer updates. Oil consumption and oil leaks are still reported on the V8, and the air suspension and complex driver-assistance sensors can be costly to repair outside warranty.
Rivals
The 750i xDrive competed with the Mercedes-Benz S550 4MATIC, the Audi A8 L, the Lexus LS 460 AWD and the Jaguar XJ L AWD.
