ABOUT THE 2011 BMW 750I XDRIVE
The 2011 BMW 750i xDrive is the all-wheel-drive, standard-wheelbase V8 version of the fifth-generation 7 Series (F01). It uses BMW’s 4.4-litre twin-turbo N63 V8, rated at 400 hp and 450 lb-ft, with drive to all four wheels. US cars of this year use a six-speed automatic, as shown on this page.
Where it sits
The F01 launched for the 2009 model year, and xDrive all-wheel drive joined the range a year later. For 2011 the line-up widened at both ends, with the six-cylinder 740i below and the V12 760Li above, leaving the 750i xDrive as the core choice for buyers in colder climates. The 2011 car still uses the original six-speed gearbox; the eight-speed automatic and an uprated V8 came with the 2013 facelift.
Comfort and technology
The F01 was designed to be more driver-focused than the E65 it replaced, with a simpler second-generation iDrive and a conventional gear selector. Options included adaptive air suspension, Integral Active Steering, night vision, a head-up display and multi-contour seats.

The N63 is the main concern. Widely reported problems include high oil consumption, valve stem seal wear, timing chain wear, fuel injector and ignition coil failures, and heat-related damage to hoses and wiring in the engine’s hot “V”. BMW addressed many of these through a dealer service programme, so check whether that work has been carried out. Air suspension, electronics and battery health are also worth inspecting.
Rivals
Its rivals included the Mercedes-Benz S550 4Matic, Audi A8 and Lexus LS 460 AWD.
