ABOUT THE 2018 BMW 750I XDRIVE
The 2018 BMW 750i xDrive is the V8 model of the sixth-generation 7 Series, sold in the US in long-wheelbase G12 form. Its 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 produces 445 hp and 480 lb-ft (650 Nm), sent to all four wheels via xDrive and an eight-speed automatic, the only gearbox offered.
Where it sits
The G12 arrived for the 2016 model year, so 2018 is its third year and the last before the 2020 facelift with its much larger grille. In the range, the 750i xDrive sat above the six-cylinder 740i and the 740e plug-in hybrid, and below the twelve-cylinder M760i xDrive. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.3 seconds.
Technology and comfort
The G12 introduced BMW’s Carbon Core body structure, which uses carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic alongside steel and aluminium to save weight. Air suspension is standard, and the cabin offered features such as gesture control for the infotainment system and, in the Executive Lounge package, a reclining rear seat with a footrest. The long wheelbase gives very generous rear legroom, making it equally suited to being driven or chauffeured.
Buying one today
This later V8 is regarded as more robust than the earliest N63 engines, but it is still complex and runs hot, so oil leaks, cooling-system parts and the cost of major services are worth budgeting for. The extensive electronics and air suspension can also be expensive to repair out of warranty.
Rivals
Rivals in 2018 included the Mercedes-Benz S560 4MATIC, the new Lexus LS 500 AWD, Audi A8 L and Genesis G90.
