About CarDetails.org

Who we are, why we built CarDetails.org and how we work.

CarDetails.org is an independent website that helps people understand cars through their specifications. We publish plain-English guides that explain what the numbers on a spec sheet actually mean, and we maintain a free, searchable database of thousands of petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles.

Why we built CarDetails.org

Specifications are one of the most useful tools a car buyer has, but they are often presented without context. Horsepower, torque, drivetrain, fuel-economy units and test cycles all mean different things in different markets, and it is easy to compare two cars on the wrong number. We started CarDetails.org to put the figures in one consistent format and to explain them clearly, so readers can compare models with confidence.

What you will find here

  • Guides and explainers — articles that explain engines, drivetrains, performance figures, fuel economy, electric-vehicle charging and how to read a spec sheet.
  • A specifications database — searchable by make, model, year, body type, fuel type and drivetrain, with engine, performance, dimension and efficiency figures where available.
  • A comparison tool — line up to three cars side by side to see where they differ.
  • Metric and imperial units — key figures are shown in both systems, and every car page has a converter for MPG, km/L and L/100km.

Who runs the site

CarDetails.org is independently owned and operated. We are not owned by, or affiliated with, any car manufacturer, dealer, marketplace or insurer, and we do not sell vehicles. No company pays to be included in our database or to receive favourable coverage.

How we work

  • Accuracy first. We compile specifications from publicly available vehicle information and correct errors as soon as we find them or readers report them. Our Data Sources & Editorial Policy explains where figures come from and their limits.
  • Context, not just numbers. Our articles explain what a figure means in day-to-day driving, not only what it is.
  • Clear about advertising. The site is free to use and is supported by advertising, including Google AdSense. Ads are always separate from our content, and advertisers have no say in what we publish.
