ABOUT THE 2010 BMW 750I XDRIVE

The 2010 BMW 750i xDrive is the all-wheel-drive version of the F01 7 Series, introduced for the 2010 model year. It uses the N63 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with 400 hp and 450 lb-ft, paired with a six-speed automatic. This entry covers the standard-wheelbase saloon; a long-wheelbase 750Li xDrive was offered too.

What was new

The F01 launched as a rear-drive car for 2009, and 2010 added xDrive all-wheel drive to the 7 Series for the first time. The system normally sends more torque to the rear but can shift drive forward when grip runs out. BMW also expanded the range for 2010 with the V12 760Li and, shortly after, the ActiveHybrid 7.

What it is like

The 750i xDrive keeps the rear-drive car’s refinement and rapid turbo V8 performance while adding all-weather security, which made it popular in snowy markets. EPA economy was rated at 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway. The cabin is spacious, quiet and heavily equipped, with options such as night vision, a head-up display and active rear-seat comfort features.

Buying one today

Early N63 engines are notorious for oil consumption, valve stem seal wear and timing-chain, injector and turbo-related problems, much of it linked to heat from the hot-vee layout. Budget for expensive electronic and air-suspension repairs on older 7 Series. Rivals included the Mercedes-Benz S550 4MATIC, Audi A8 quattro and Lexus LS 460 AWD.
