ABOUT THE 2015 BMW X5 M
The 2015 BMW X5 M is the high-performance version of the third-generation X5, internally coded F85, and 2015 was its launch year. Its 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 produces 567 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm), and all-wheel drive is standard. This entry covers the eight-speed M Steptronic automatic, the only gearbox offered.
A new generation
The F85 replaced the E70-based X5 M, gaining power and switching from a six-speed to an eight-speed automatic. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.0 seconds, with top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. Like other X5s, it was built in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and the related X6 M shared its drivetrain.
Living with it
Despite its pace, the X5 M keeps the regular X5’s five-seat cabin, split tailgate and large boot, so it can serve as a family vehicle. M-specific suspension, steering and brakes are tuned for much higher speeds than the standard car, with a firmer ride as the trade-off.
Buying one today
The S63 V8 places its turbochargers inside the vee of the engine, which concentrates heat. Commonly reported issues include oil consumption, oil and coolant leaks and heat-related wear of hoses and seals. Brakes and wide tyres are expensive consumables on a vehicle this heavy and fast.
Rivals
The X5 M faced the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Range Rover Sport SVR, Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT.
