ABOUT THE 2018 BMW X5 M
The 2018 BMW X5 M is the high-performance version of the third-generation X5 (F85), in one of the final years of that generation. Its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 produces 567 hp and 553 lb-ft, sent to all four wheels via xDrive and an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic. It was assembled at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in the United States.
Late in the cycle
By 2018 the F85 had been on sale for four model years with only minor equipment changes. The regular X5 moved to the new G05 generation for 2019, and the next X5 M did not appear until the 2020 model year, so a 2018 car is among the last and most complete examples of the F85. BMW quoted 0-60 mph in 4.0 seconds and a 155 mph limited top speed.
Daily usability
Underneath the performance hardware the X5 M is still an X5, with a spacious cabin, a split tailgate and a large boot. Adaptive dampers and selectable driving modes allow a calmer setting for everyday use, although the ride remains firmer than a standard X5. Fuel consumption is high, with an EPA city rating of about 14 mpg (roughly 17 L/100km).

Running costs are the main consideration. Commonly reported S63 issues include oil and coolant leaks, heat-related wear of hoses and seals, and oil consumption. Large-diameter brakes and wide tyres are expensive to replace, and a specialist inspection is advisable.
Rivals
Its 2018 rivals included the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Range Rover Sport SVR and the newly launched Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.
