ABOUT THE 2022 BMW X5 M
The 2022 BMW X5 M is the high-performance version of the fourth-generation X5 (G05), with the M division’s chassis code F95. It uses the S63 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8, rated at 600 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, driving all four wheels through an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic and the rear-biased M xDrive system. A Competition model with 617 hp was also offered.
Where 2022 fits
This generation of X5 M arrived for the 2020 model year, replacing the F85 with more power, a stiffer chassis and an Active M Differential at the rear axle. The 2022 model year was a mid-cycle year with largely carried-over specifications; the X5 M received its mid-life update for 2024. Like all X5 models, it is built at BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 3.8 seconds for the standard X5 M.
What it is like
The X5 M combines the space of a five-seat luxury SUV with performance that rivals many sports cars. M xDrive includes a 4WD Sport mode that sends more torque to the rear wheels, and the adaptive M suspension and configurable drive settings let the driver switch between comfort and track-focused responses. Fuel consumption is high, as expected for a twin-turbocharged V8 SUV of this weight.

Running costs are significant, including large tyres and brakes. The S63 is a complex engine that needs disciplined maintenance; oil consumption, cooling system leaks and turbocharger-related issues are commonly discussed on the S63 family, so check service history carefully.
Rivals
Rivals included the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S, the Audi RS Q8 and the Range Rover Sport SVR.
