ABOUT THE 2016 BMW X5 M
The 2016 BMW X5 M is the full M version of the third-generation X5 (F85). It is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 567 hp and 553 lb-ft, with xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic. Like other X5 models of this generation, it was built in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Second year of the F85
The F85 X5 M arrived for the 2015 model year, replacing the E70 version. Compared with its predecessor it gained more power, an eight-speed automatic in place of the earlier six-speed, and improved efficiency. In 2016, its second season, it continued largely unchanged. BMW quoted 0-60 mph in 4.0 seconds, with top speed limited to 155 mph.
What it is like
The X5 M pairs very strong straight-line performance with grip and body control that few large SUVs of its time could match, thanks to M-specific suspension tuning, uprated brakes and a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system. It keeps the regular X5’s practicality, with five seats and a split tailgate, although the ride is firm on large wheels.
Buying one today
The S63 twin-turbo V8 is complex, and its turbochargers sit inside the V of the engine, which generates a lot of heat. Commonly reported issues include oil leaks, coolant leaks and wear related to that heat, as well as high oil consumption on some engines. Expect substantial costs for tyres, brakes and servicing.
Rivals
The X5 M competed with the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S, Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and Range Rover Sport SVR.
