ABOUT THE 2013 BMW X5 M
The 2013 BMW X5 M is the high-performance M version of the second-generation X5 (E70), a mid-size luxury SUV. It uses the S63 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with 555 hp and 500 lb-ft (680 Nm), xDrive all-wheel drive and a six-speed M Sport automatic transmission.
Last of the first X5 M
The X5 M went on sale for the 2010 model year as the first M-developed SUV, alongside the X6 M. The 2013 model year was its final one in E70 form: the regular X5 moved to the F15 generation for 2014, and the next X5 M (F85) did not arrive until the 2015 model year. Like every X5, it was built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.5 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
Engineering
The S63 places its turbochargers inside the vee of the engine with a cross-bank exhaust manifold, an arrangement that reduces turbo lag. M-specific adaptive dampers, rear air suspension and a torque-vectoring rear differential helped the heavy SUV handle with real composure. Despite the performance, it retains the X5’s practical five-seat cabin and large boot.
Buying one today
The early S63 is known for heat-related wear, oil consumption, turbo and fuel injector issues, and timing chain concerns; heavy maintenance costs are common. Check for coolant leaks, worn brakes and tyres, and fault codes in the transfer case and rear differential. A specialist pre-purchase inspection is strongly recommended.
Rivals
Alternatives included the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG and Range Rover Sport Supercharged.
