ABOUT THE 2023 BMW X5 M
The 2023 BMW X5 M is the high-performance version of the fourth-generation X5, known internally as the F95. It uses the S63 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, rated at 600 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) in standard form, with M xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic. BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 3.8 seconds, and the car is built in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Final year before the update
The F95 X5 M and X5 M Competition arrived for the 2020 model year. The 2023 car is the last of the pre-facelift models; for 2024 BMW updated the X5 M with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, revised styling and the curved display, and the US line-up moved to the Competition only. That makes the 2023 X5 M one of the last versions of this car without mild-hybrid assistance.
What it is like
The X5 M combines a large five-seat SUV body with acceleration that rivals many sports cars. Adaptive M suspension, large brakes and a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system help it handle far better than its size suggests. Inside, it keeps the X5’s spacious cabin and split tailgate.
Buying one today
BMW’s twin-turbo V8s are known for higher oil consumption and heat-related wear to hoses, turbo oil lines and seals in the hot-vee area. Insist on frequent oil changes and a full service history. Tyres and brakes are expensive.
Rivals
The X5 M competed with the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S, Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Audi RS Q8.
