ABOUT THE 2017 BMW X5 M
The 2017 BMW X5 M is the high-performance version of the third-generation X5 (F85), built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It uses a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 567 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm), sent to all four wheels via xDrive and an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic, the only gearbox offered.
Where it sits
The F85 X5 M launched for the 2015 model year, so 2017 is its third year. Compared with the previous E70 X5 M, it gained more power and torque and switched from a six-speed to an eight-speed automatic. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.0 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. The F85 ran until the 2018 model year; there was no 2019 X5 M, and the next-generation F95 arrived for 2020.
What it is like
The X5 M combines supercar-like straight-line pace with the practicality of a large SUV. Adaptive M suspension, a rear-biased xDrive setting, M-specific steering and larger brakes help it disguise its weight, while the cabin and boot remain as usable as a regular X5’s. Fuel consumption is high, at around 14 mpg in the city (roughly 17 L/100km).
Buying one today
The S63 V8 is powerful but costly to run. Commonly reported issues include oil consumption, coolant and oil leaks, and heat-related wear due to the turbochargers mounted inside the V. Tyres and brakes wear quickly on a vehicle of this weight and performance, so factor in replacement costs.
Rivals
The 2017 X5 M competed with the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S, Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Range Rover Sport SVR.
