ABOUT THE 2023 BMW X1 XDRIVE28I
The 2023 BMW X1 xDrive28i marks the launch of the third-generation X1 (U11). In the US it was offered in a single version, using a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 241 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm), a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 6.2 seconds.
An all-new X1
The U11 replaced the F48 with a larger, more upright body and a completely new interior. The dashboard is dominated by BMW’s curved display, combining a digital instrument screen and a central touchscreen running iDrive 8, and many physical buttons were removed. The eight-speed torque-converter automatic of the previous X1 gave way to the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and power rose compared with the 2022 model.
Practicality
The X1 remains one of the most practical small premium SUVs. The transverse-engine layout allows a roomy cabin for its footprint, and the boot is generous for the class. Its compact dimensions make it easy to park in town.
Buying one today
As a first-year car of a new generation, check that software updates and any recall work have been completed. The dual-clutch transmission should shift smoothly; hesitation at low speed is worth investigating. The four-cylinder engine family has known weak points such as coolant leaks.
Rivals
Competitors included the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA 250, Volvo XC40 and Lexus UX.
