ABOUT THE 2013 BMW X1 XDRIVE28I
The 2013 BMW X1 xDrive28i is the all-wheel-drive four-cylinder version of the first-generation X1 (E84), BMW’s smallest SUV at the time, with five seats and a tailgate. It uses the N20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 240 hp and 260 lb-ft, an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. The car was built in Leipzig, Germany.
Arrival in America
Although the X1 had been on sale in Europe since 2009, 2013 was its first model year in the US. BMW offered three versions: the rear-drive sDrive28i, this xDrive28i, and the six-cylinder xDrive35i with a six-speed automatic. The US cars received the facelifted styling and interior introduced elsewhere at about the same time.
What it is like
The X1 is based on the E90-era 3 Series platform, so it drives more like a raised estate car than a typical crossover, with sharp steering and a low seating position for an SUV. The trade-offs are a firm ride, especially on run-flat tyres, and less rear space and boot room than larger rivals.
Buying one today
The best-known weak point of early N20 engines is wear of the timing chain guides, which can cause a rattle at start-up and, if ignored, serious engine damage. Oil leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover, and the electric water pump, are also commonly reported. A car with evidence of timing-chain work and regular oil changes is preferable.
Rivals
Rivals included the Audi Q5 2.0T, Mercedes-Benz GLK350, Volvo XC60 and Range Rover Evoque.
