ABOUT THE 2019 BMW X1 XDRIVE28I
The 2019 BMW X1 xDrive28i is the all-wheel-drive version of the second-generation X1 (F48), BMW’s smallest SUV in North America. It uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder producing 228 hp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm), paired with an eight-speed automatic. The F48 sits on BMW’s front-wheel-drive-based UKL platform, and xDrive sends power to the rear axle as needed.
The last pre-facelift year
The 2019 model year was the final one before the X1’s mid-life update, which arrived for 2020 with a larger kidney grille, new LED lights and revised trim. That makes the 2019 car the last of the original F48 design, which had launched for 2016 and moved the X1 away from its rear-drive E84 predecessor.
Practicality
The transverse engine layout freed up a lot of space: the F48 has a taller body than the old X1, generous rear legroom for its size and a usefully square boot, with split-folding rear seats. In the US the X1 was offered only with this engine, either as the front-drive sDrive28i or this all-wheel-drive xDrive28i, so the main choices were drivetrain and option packages.
Buying one today
The B46 four-cylinder is generally regarded as robust, but commonly reported items on these cars include oil leaks from gaskets as they age, coolant-system parts and the usual run-flat tyre wear. Make sure the automatic gearbox shifts smoothly and that infotainment and parking sensors work.
Rivals
In 2019 the X1 competed with the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Volvo XC40 and Lexus UX.
