ABOUT THE 2017 BMW X1 XDRIVE28I
The 2017 BMW X1 xDrive28i is the all-wheel-drive version of the second-generation X1 (F48), a compact premium SUV. It uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, sent through an eight-speed automatic to BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
Second year of a new approach
The F48 arrived in North America for the 2016 model year and marked a big change of direction. Where the original E84 X1 was based on the rear-drive 3 Series, the new car moved to BMW’s transverse-engine, front-drive-based platform shared with MINI. For 2017, its second year on sale, the xDrive28i remained the core US model, and the car carried on largely unchanged from its launch specification.
Space and everyday use
The switch to a transverse layout paid off inside. The F48 sits taller than its predecessor, with noticeably more rear legroom and headroom and a larger boot, and the rear seats fold to create a long, flat load area. A raised driving position makes it an easy car to live with in town, while the turbocharged engine offers good mid-range pull for motorway overtakes.
Buying one today
The B46 four-cylinder is generally regarded as robust, though owners commonly report oil leaks from gaskets and cooling-system parts such as the expansion tank as the miles build up. Check that the automatic shifts smoothly, that servicing has been kept up, and that the infotainment and parking sensors all work.
Rivals
In 2017 the X1 competed with the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC, Infiniti QX30 and Lexus NX 200t, as well as the closely related MINI Countryman.
