ABOUT THE 2022 BMW X1 XDRIVE28I

The 2022 BMW X1 xDrive28i is the final model year of the second-generation X1 (F48), BMW’s smallest SUV in the US at the time alongside the X2. It uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 228 hp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm), an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 6.3 seconds.

End of the F48

The F48 arrived for the 2016 model year and moved the X1 onto a front-wheel-drive-based platform, with xDrive models sending power to the rear wheels when needed. A facelift for 2020 brought a larger grille and updated lights. The 2022 car was the last before the all-new third-generation X1 (U11) arrived for 2023.

Practicality

The transverse-engine layout gives the X1 a roomy cabin for its size. The rear seat splits and folds, and the boot is generous for a compact SUV. It is easy to park and economical, with the four-cylinder providing enough pace for most drivers.

Buying one today

BMW’s modular four-cylinder is generally reliable; commonly reported faults include coolant leaks, oil filter housing gasket leaks and electric water pump failures. A late-production 2022 car benefits from the updates made through the model’s life.

Rivals

Rivals included the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA 250, Volvo XC40 and Lexus UX.
