ABOUT THE 2018 BMW X1 XDRIVE28I
The 2018 BMW X1 xDrive28i is the all-wheel-drive version of the second-generation X1 (F48), BMW’s smallest SUV at the time, built in Germany. It uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 228 hp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm), with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 6.3 seconds.
A front-drive-based X1
The F48 arrived for the 2016 model year and marked a major change: unlike the rear-drive-based first X1 (E84), it uses BMW’s transverse-engine UKL2 platform shared with MINI. That layout freed up interior space, and the F48 is taller than its predecessor with a more upright SUV stance. By 2018 the model was in the middle of its life, ahead of the 2020 facelift, and a front-drive sDrive28i was also offered.
Practicality
For a compact SUV, the X1 is roomy. The raised seating position, generous rear headroom and split-folding rear seats make it family-friendly, and the boot is large for the class. The xDrive system normally sends power to the front wheels and shifts torque rearward when needed.
Buying one today
The 2.0-litre B46 engine has a generally good record. Points worth checking include coolant leaks, the condition of the transfer case and rear differential on xDrive models, and run-flat tyre wear. Confirm that any outstanding recalls have been completed by a dealer.
Rivals
The X1 competed with the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC, Infiniti QX30 and Lexus NX.
