ABOUT THE 2020 BMW X1 XDRIVE28I
The 2020 BMW X1 xDrive28i is the facelifted (LCI) version of the second-generation X1 (F48), BMW’s smallest SUV in North America. It uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder (B46) producing 228 hp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm), with xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic. A front-wheel-drive sDrive28i was also sold.
The 2020 facelift
2020 was the year the F48 received its mid-cycle update. Changes included a larger kidney grille, revised bumpers, new LED lights and updated interior trim and infotainment. The powertrain carried over. Unlike the rear-wheel-drive first-generation X1, the F48 is built on BMW’s front-wheel-drive UKL platform, with xDrive sending power to the rear axle as needed. It was built in Regensburg, Germany.
Practicality
The front-drive layout frees up a lot of space: the X1 offers a roomy rear bench, a high seating position and a usable boot for a compact SUV. EPA ratings of 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway (about 10.2 and 7.6 L/100km) are competitive for the class.

Points to check include coolant leaks, oil leaks from the oil filter housing gasket, and smooth operation of the eight-speed automatic. Run-flat tyres were common on BMWs of this period and wear relatively quickly on a car like this.
Rivals
In 2020 the X1 competed with the Audi Q3, the Mercedes-Benz GLA and GLB, the Volvo XC40, the Lexus UX and the Range Rover Evoque.
