ABOUT THE 2022 BMW X7 XDRIVE40I
The 2022 BMW X7 xDrive40i is the six-cylinder version of BMW’s largest SUV, the first-generation X7 (G07), in its final year before the facelift. It uses the turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six (B58) producing 335 hp and 330 lb-ft (450 Nm), with xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic. It is a conventional petrol model; mild-hybrid assistance only arrived with the 2023 update.
The last pre-facelift year
The X7 went on sale for the 2019 model year as BMW’s first full-size three-row SUV. The 2022 model year was the last for the original design, with its one-piece headlights and the iDrive 7 interior. For 2023 the X7 was facelifted with split headlights, a curved display and more powerful engines.
Practicality
Three rows are standard, with seven seats or six when the optional second-row captain’s chairs are chosen. The third row is usable by adults on shorter trips, helped by the 3,105 mm wheelbase. Two-axle air suspension is standard and gives a smooth ride. The X7 is built in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Buying one today
The B58 engine has a generally good reputation. Points to check include coolant leaks from the expansion tank and pipes, the air suspension, and the many electronic comfort features. Large wheels and tyres are costly to replace on a vehicle of this weight.
Rivals
The X7 competed with the Mercedes-Benz GLS, the Audi Q7, the Range Rover, the Lincoln Navigator and the Cadillac Escalade.
