ABOUT THE 2024 BMW X7 XDRIVE40I
The 2024 BMW X7 xDrive40i is the six-cylinder version of BMW’s flagship three-row SUV (G07), in the second model year of its facelift. It uses a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six (B58) with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 375 hp and 398 lb-ft (540 Nm). Power goes to all four wheels through xDrive and an eight-speed automatic.
The facelifted X7
The update introduced for 2023 transformed the X7’s appearance with split headlights, a slim upper light strip and a reshaped grille. Inside, a curved display combining the instruments and a large touchscreen runs BMW’s iDrive 8 system. The 40i gained more power than the 335 hp pre-facelift model, plus mild-hybrid assistance that smooths stop-start operation and adds a short electric boost.
Practicality
The X7 seats seven as standard, or six with optional second-row captain’s chairs, and the 3,105 mm wheelbase allows a third row that adults can use. Two-axle air suspension is standard, and the split tailgate makes loading easier. All X7s are built in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Buying one today
The B58 engine is generally well regarded. As with any large luxury SUV, check the air suspension, the operation of the many electronic comfort and driver-assistance systems, and wheel and tyre condition, which can be expensive to put right on a heavy vehicle.
Rivals
Competitors included the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, the Range Rover, the Lincoln Navigator, the Cadillac Escalade and the Audi Q7.
