ABOUT THE 2021 BMW X7 XDRIVE40I
The 2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i is the six-cylinder version of the G07 X7, BMW’s three-row flagship SUV. It is powered by the B58 turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six, producing 335 hp and 330 lb-ft (450 Nm), with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 5.8 seconds.
The 2021 model year
2021 was the X7’s third year on sale and sat between its 2019 launch and the major facelift that arrived for 2023. Changes were limited mainly to equipment and package content, and the xDrive40i remained the volume model below the V8 M50i. In the US this version has a conventional petrol powertrain; the 48-volt mild-hybrid system came later.
Practicality
The X7’s main appeal is space. Built in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on a 3,105 mm wheelbase, it seats seven as standard, or six with optional second-row captain’s chairs, and the second and third rows fold electrically. Two-axle air suspension is standard, and the luggage area remains usable even with all seats in place.
Buying one today
The B58 is generally robust, but commonly reported items include coolant leaks and oil-filter-housing gasket leaks. Check the air suspension, the electrically adjustable seats and the panoramic roof, and make sure software updates and recalls have been completed by a BMW dealer.
Rivals
Rivals included the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade.
