ABOUT THE 2019 BMW 530E XDRIVE
The 2019 BMW 530e xDrive is the all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid version of the seventh-generation 5 Series saloon (G30). It pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor built into the eight-speed automatic gearbox, for a combined system output of 248 hp and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm). The lithium-ion battery, rated at 9.2 kWh, sits under the rear seat.
Where it sits
The 530e reached the US for the 2018 model year, so 2019 was its second season. It sat alongside the conventional 530i and 540i as the most efficient 5 Series, offering a short electric-only range (the EPA quoted 15 miles for the xDrive model) for commuting while keeping the petrol engine for longer trips. Later cars, from the 2021 model year, gained a larger battery and a temporary power boost, so the figures here apply to the earlier version.
Practicality
Packaging the battery under the rear seat meant the fuel tank shrank and the boot floor rose, so luggage space is noticeably smaller than in other 5 Series models, and the rear seats are less flexible. Charging from a home wallbox or public Level 2 point takes a few hours; there is no DC fast charging.
Buying one today
Check the charging history and whether the car has been plugged in regularly, as well as the condition of the charging cable and port. High-voltage battery health declines with age, so a dealer health check is worthwhile on any used plug-in hybrid.
Rivals
The most direct plug-in rival in 2019 was the Volvo S90 T8; buyers also compared it with petrol versions of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6.
