ABOUT THE 2020 BMW 530E XDRIVE
The 2020 BMW 530e xDrive is the all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid version of the seventh-generation 5 Series (G30) saloon. It combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic, for a combined system output of 248 hp and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm). A lithium-ion battery of about 9.2 kWh sits beneath the rear seat.
Where the 2020 model sits
The 530e first went on sale for the 2018 model year, initially badged 530e iPerformance, with a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive. The 2020 model year was the last before the 5 Series facelift: for 2021 BMW fitted a larger battery and added an XtraBoost function that raised peak system output to 288 hp. The 2020 car is therefore the final version with the original hybrid specification.
Daily use
The 530e can run on electric power alone for short commutes, then behaves as a conventional hybrid when the battery is depleted. Charging from a typical Level 2 home charger takes a few hours. The trade-offs for the battery are a smaller boot than in the petrol 5 Series and a fuel tank reduced to about 46 litres. Cabin space is otherwise unchanged.
Buying one today
Check the battery’s state of health and that charging works on both the car’s socket and any included cable. The four-cylinder petrol engine is generally robust, though coolant and oil filter housing leaks are reported. Hybrid-system warnings should be investigated by a specialist.
Rivals
Its most direct plug-in rival in the US was the Volvo S90 T8, while buyers also compared it with the Lexus ES 300h and conventional Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class models.
