2018 BMW 530e xDrive
The 2018 BMW 530e xDrive is a plug-in hybrid sedan. It has a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 248 hp (185 kW), with an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. 0–60 mph takes 5.3 seconds and top speed is 155 mph (249 km/h).
ABOUT THE 2018 BMW 530E XDRIVE
The 2018 BMW 530e xDrive iPerformance is the plug-in hybrid version of the seventh-generation 5 Series sedan (G30), with all-wheel drive. It pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic gearbox, giving a combined system output of 248 hp and 310 lb-ft. A lithium-ion battery of about 9.2 kWh gross capacity sits beneath the rear seat.
New for 2018
The 530e launched in the US for the 2018 model year, a year after the G30 5 Series itself. It was offered with rear-wheel drive or, as here, with xDrive all-wheel drive. The plug-in system allows short journeys on electric power alone, while the petrol engine takes over for longer trips. It shares the G30’s 2,975 mm wheelbase, so rear-seat space is the same as other 5 Series sedans.
Practicality
Placing the battery under the rear seat preserves most of the cabin, but the fuel tank is smaller and the boot floor is raised compared with petrol models, reducing luggage space. Charging from a standard household socket takes several hours, while a Level 2 charger is considerably quicker.
Buying one today
Check that the car has a full service history and that the hybrid system shows no warning lights. As with any plug-in hybrid, battery capacity can degrade over time, so it is worth confirming the electric range remains reasonable. The 2.0-litre engine is generally regarded as more robust than BMW’s earlier four-cylinder turbo.
Rivals
Rivals in 2018 included the Volvo S90 T8, and buyers might also have considered conventional luxury sedans such as the Mercedes-Benz E300 4MATIC and the Audi A6 quattro.
