ABOUT THE 2021 BMW 530E XDRIVE
The 2021 BMW 530e xDrive is the all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid version of the seventh-generation 5 Series (G30), in the first year of its mid-life facelift. It combines a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder with an electric motor built into the eight-speed automatic, for a combined output of 288 hp and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) when the XtraBoost function is active.
What was new for 2021
The facelifted 5 Series brought a reshaped kidney grille, slimmer LED headlights, new tail lights and the latest iDrive 7 software. For the 530e, the headline change was XtraBoost, which lifts system output by 40 hp for short bursts when the driver uses Sport mode or kicks down. The battery sits under the rear seat, and the car can run on electricity alone at moderate speeds.
Practicality
Packaging the battery cost boot space: the 530e’s luggage area is smaller than in the petrol 530i, and the fuel tank is also reduced. Otherwise it offers the same roomy cabin as the rest of the range, with a 2,975 mm wheelbase. Charging from a Level 2 wallbox takes a few hours, so it suits drivers who can plug in at home or work.
Buying one today
Check the charging history and that the car charges correctly on both a home socket and a public point. As with other BMW plug-ins of this era, commonly reported items include charging-system faults and high-voltage battery warnings, as well as normal B46/B48 oil and coolant leaks with age.
Rivals
The most direct plug-in rival in the US was the Volvo S90 Recharge; buyers also compared it with conventional petrol saloons such as the Audi A6 45 TFSI quattro and Mercedes-Benz E 350 4MATIC.
