ABOUT THE 2015 BMW X4 XDRIVE28I
The 2015 BMW X4 xDrive28i is the four-cylinder launch model of the first-generation X4 (F26), a coupe-styled compact SUV based on the X3. It uses the 2.0-litre N20 turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 240 hp and 260 lb-ft, with xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic as standard.
A new model for 2015
The X4 was introduced for the 2015 model year, applying the sloping-roof idea of the larger X6 to the X3 platform. It shares the X3’s 2,810 mm wheelbase and much of its interior, but sits lower and has a fastback rear with a tailgate. At launch the range comprised the xDrive28i and the six-cylinder xDrive35i, with the M40i following later. Like the X3, it was built at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina.
Practicality
The sloping roofline reduces rear headroom and cargo space compared with the X3, so the X4 is best suited to buyers who prioritise style over outright practicality. The rear seat folds in a 40/20/40 split, which helps when carrying long items with rear passengers aboard. The driving position is lower and sportier than the X3’s.

The N20 engine’s timing-chain guides are its best-known weak point, and early engines in particular can develop chain noise; check for a rattle or whine on start-up. Oil filter housing gasket leaks, valve cover leaks and electric coolant pump failures are also commonly reported.
Rivals
When it launched, the X4 had few direct rivals; the Range Rover Evoque was the most similar in concept, while the Porsche Macan and Audi Q5 were common alternatives.
