ABOUT THE 2016 BMW X4 XDRIVE28I
The 2016 BMW X4 xDrive28i is the entry-level version of the first-generation X4 (F26), BMW’s coupe-styled crossover based on the second-generation X3. It is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder (N20) producing 240 hp and 260 lb-ft (350 Nm), with xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic as the only gearbox.
Second year on sale
The X4 arrived in North America for the 2015 model year as a sloping-roof alternative to the X3, sharing that car’s platform and much of its interior. For 2016 BMW broadened the range by adding the more powerful six-cylinder X4 M40i above the xDrive28i and xDrive35i, giving the line-up a clear performance flagship.
Practicality
The trade-off for the fastback roofline is rear headroom and boot space, both noticeably smaller than in the X3. Rear passengers sit lower than in the X3 to compensate for the roof, and the tailgate opening is shallower. For buyers who rarely use the back seats, the X4 offers a sportier look with the same raised driving position. Like the X3, it was built at BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Buying one today
The N20 engine’s known weak points include the timing-chain guides, which were the subject of widely reported failures on earlier production, along with oil leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover, and electric water-pump failure. A documented service history matters.
Rivals
At the time the X4’s closest rival was the Range Rover Evoque; the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe followed for the 2017 model year. More conventional alternatives included the Audi Q5 and the Porsche Macan.
