ABOUT THE 2017 BMW X4 XDRIVE28I
The 2017 BMW X4 xDrive28i is the four-cylinder entry version of the first-generation X4 (F26), BMW’s sloping-roof SUV derived from the X3. It uses the N20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive, which was standard on every US X4.
Mid-life year
The X4 arrived for the 2015 model year, so 2017 was its third season, with only small equipment and package changes. Above the xDrive28i sat the six-cylinder xDrive35i and the high-performance M40i. All F26 models were built in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on the same 2,810 mm wheelbase as the X3.
Practicality
The coupe-like roofline gives the X4 a distinctive look but reduces rear headroom and cargo space compared with the X3. It is still a usable five-seater with a powered tailgate and split-folding rear seats, and the four-cylinder engine is the most economical choice in the range.
Buying one today
The N20 engine’s best-known weak point is wear of the timing chain guides, mainly on earlier engines, so listen for rattles on start-up and ask about any repairs. Oil filter housing gasket leaks and electric water pump failures are also commonly reported.
Rivals
Rivals in 2017 included the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, which was new that year, the Porsche Macan and the Range Rover Evoque.
