ABOUT THE 2018 BMW X4 XDRIVE28I
The 2018 BMW X4 xDrive28i is the last model year of the first-generation X4 (F26), the coupe-roofed SUV built on X3 underpinnings. Under the bonnet is the N20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, rated at 240 hp and 260 lb-ft, with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive.
Run-out year
Because 2018 was the final year for the F26, buyers got a fully developed car with no major changes. For the 2019 model year BMW replaced it with the second-generation G02 X4, which moved to the newer CLAR-based platform of the G01 X3 and a revised four-cylinder in the xDrive30i. The 2018 xDrive28i was assembled in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Living with it
The X4 trades some rear headroom and luggage space for its sporty profile, but it still has five seats, a powered tailgate and folding rear seats. The four-cylinder offers adequate performance and better fuel economy than the six-cylinder xDrive35i and M40i.
Buying one today
Ask about the N20’s timing chain guides, a widely reported weak point on these engines, along with leaks from the oil filter housing gasket and failures of the electric water pump. A full BMW service history adds confidence.
Rivals
In its last year the X4 faced the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, Porsche Macan and Range Rover Velar, along with conventional SUVs such as the Audi Q5.
