ABOUT THE 2008 BENTLEY CONTINENTAL FLYING SPUR
The 2008 Bentley Continental Flying Spur is the four-door, long-wheelbase saloon version of the first-generation Continental GT. Introduced in 2005, it shares the coupe’s 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12, producing 552 hp and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm), along with permanent all-wheel drive and a six-speed ZF automatic.
A fast four-door Bentley
The Flying Spur stretched the GT’s platform to a 3,065 mm wheelbase, creating a proper rear compartment for adults. Bentley quoted a top speed of 195 mph, which made it one of the fastest four-door saloons on sale when new. The 2008 model year was the last before a more powerful Flying Spur Speed was added to the range, so the 2008 car represents the standard specification in its settled form.
Comfort and space
Rear passengers get generous legroom, and the car could be ordered with either a three-seat rear bench or two individual seats. Air suspension with adjustable damping gives a smooth ride, while the all-wheel-drive system makes the heavy car stable on wet roads. The boot is a reasonable size for long trips. Weight is around 2,550 kg, which helps explain fuel consumption of more than 20 L/100km in urban driving.
Buying one today
As with the Continental GT, values have fallen far faster than running costs. Commonly reported issues include air suspension struts and compressors, electrical gremlins and expensive engine-bay work on the W12, where many components are hard to reach. Look for a car with consistent specialist maintenance.
Rivals
It competed with the Mercedes-Benz S600, BMW 760Li and Maserati Quattroporte.
