ABOUT THE 2023 BMW M235I XDRIVE GRAN COUPE
The 2023 BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe is the performance version of the first-generation 2 Series Gran Coupe (F44), a compact four-door saloon with a conventional boot lid. It uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 301 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm), with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive as standard. It is built in Leipzig, Germany.
A different kind of 2 Series
Unlike the rear-wheel-drive 2 Series coupe, the Gran Coupe uses BMW’s front-wheel-drive-based platform shared with the 1 Series and X1, with a transversely mounted engine. It arrived for the 2020 model year, so the 2023 car is a mid-life example, with the US range consisting of the 228i and this more powerful M235i. Its xDrive system can send power rearward when needed, and the M235i adds a mechanical limited-slip differential at the front axle.
Practicality
The Gran Coupe offers four doors and a usable boot in a compact footprint, making it an easy city car. The sloping roof limits rear headroom for taller passengers, and the rear seat is best for shorter trips. The interior uses BMW’s digital instruments and central touchscreen.
Buying one today
The four-cylinder engine is shared with many BMW and MINI models. Commonly reported issues include coolant leaks and oil filter housing gasket leaks. Check tyre wear, as the car is often driven hard.
Rivals
Its main rivals were the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 and the Audi S3 Sedan.
