The 2021 BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe is the top model of the 2 Series Gran Coupe (F44), a compact four-door saloon with a coupe-like roofline. Unlike the rear-drive 2 Series coupe, it is built on BMW’s front-wheel-drive-based platform shared with the current 1 Series. Its B48 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder produces 301 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm), with xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic.
Second year on sale
The Gran Coupe arrived in North America for 2020, so 2021 was its second model year, with the US range made up of the 228i xDrive and this M235i xDrive. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.6 seconds. The M235i adds a mechanical limited-slip differential on the front axle, sportier suspension and larger brakes compared with the 228i.
Practicality
Four doors and five seats make the Gran Coupe more practical than a two-door coupe, though the sloping roofline reduces rear headroom for taller passengers. The boot is a reasonable size for a compact saloon.
