ABOUT THE 2022 BMW M235I XDRIVE GRAN COUPE
The 2022 BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe is the M Performance version of the 2 Series Gran Coupe (F44), a compact four-door saloon with a coupe-like roofline. It uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 301 hp and 295 lb-ft, and drives all four wheels through xDrive and an eight-speed Steptronic automatic, the only transmission offered.
A different kind of 2 Series
The Gran Coupe arrived for the 2020 model year and, unlike the rear-drive 2 Series Coupe, is based on BMW’s front-wheel-drive architecture shared with the 1 Series hatchback and Mini. In the M235i the xDrive system can send torque to the rear axle, and a Torsen limited-slip differential at the front helps put power down. By 2022 the car was in its third model year, sitting above the four-cylinder 228i models.
What it is like
BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.6 seconds, making it the quickest model in the 2 Series Gran Coupe range. It is agile and grippy, but its driving feel differs from rear-drive BMWs; some buyers will prefer the steering and balance of a traditional 2 Series Coupe.
Practicality
Despite the coupe name it has four doors and five seats, although rear headroom is limited by the roofline. The boot is usefully sized for a compact saloon.
Buying one today
The B48 four-cylinder engine is widely used across BMW and Mini models and has no widespread major faults. Check that software updates have been applied and that the car’s tyres are in good condition, as performance tyres can wear quickly.
Rivals
The M235i xDrive Gran Coupe competed with the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 and Audi S3 saloon.
