The 2021 BMW M5 is a sedan. It has a 4.4-litre turbocharged eight-cylinder engine producing 600 hp (447 kW), with an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. 0–60 mph takes 3.2 seconds and top speed is 190 mph (306 km/h).
ABOUT THE 2021 BMW M5
The 2021 BMW M5 is the facelifted version of the sixth-generation M5 (F90), based on the G30 5 Series saloon. Its S63 twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 makes 600 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm), with an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic and M xDrive all-wheel drive, which can be switched to a pure rear-wheel-drive mode.
The 2021 facelift
The F90 arrived for 2018 as the first M5 with all-wheel drive. For 2021 it received the 5 Series mid-life update: new headlights with L-shaped daytime running lights, revised tail lights, a larger central touchscreen running iDrive 7, and updated chassis tuning. The standard M5 kept its 600 hp, while the M5 Competition was rated at 617 hp.
What it is like
The F90 combines executive-saloon comfort with very high performance. M xDrive is rear-biased in its sportier settings, and the driver can configure engine, chassis and steering through the M1 and M2 buttons. The cabin and boot match the regular 5 Series, so it remains a practical five-seat family car.
Buying one today
Running costs are high: tyres, brakes and servicing are all expensive. The S63 is generally more durable than earlier versions of BMW’s twin-turbo V8, but commonly reported items include oil leaks and wear of ignition coils and spark plugs. Check for a full BMW service history.
Rivals
Competitors included the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4MATIC+, Audi RS 6 Avant and RS 7, and the Porsche Panamera 4S and GTS.
