ABOUT THE 2016 BMW M5
The 2016 BMW M5 is the high-performance version of the sixth-generation 5 Series saloon (F10), and one of the last model years of this M5 before the all-wheel-drive F90 replaced it. It uses BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 (S63) producing 560 hp and 500 lb-ft (680 Nm), sending power to the rear wheels only. This entry covers the version with the seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission; a six-speed manual was offered in North America as a no-cost alternative.
Late in the F10’s life
By 2016 the F10 M5 was a mature car. The optional Competition Package, available since the 2014 model year, raised output to 575 hp and added firmer suspension tuning and sharper steering. Standard equipment included adaptive dampers, an Active M Differential and a configurable M Drive system that let drivers store their preferred engine, steering and gearbox settings.
What it is like
Turbocharging transformed the M5’s character compared with the high-revving V10 of its E60 predecessor: the F10 delivers enormous mid-range pull and is far easier to drive quickly in everyday traffic. It remains a full-size five-seat executive saloon with a usable boot, which makes it a genuine daily car.
Buying one today
Commonly reported concerns on the S63 include oil consumption, coolant and oil leaks, and wear in the turbocharger and valve-cover areas, all of which are expensive to put right. Rod-bearing wear has also been discussed among owners. Maintenance records and a pre-purchase inspection by a BMW M specialist are strongly advisable.
