ABOUT THE 2019 BMW M5
The 2019 BMW M5 is the sixth-generation M5 (F90), based on the G30 5 Series saloon. Its 4.4-litre S63 twin-turbo V8 produces 600 hp and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft). Unlike earlier M5s it uses all-wheel drive. The M xDrive system is rear-biased and can be switched to a pure rear-wheel-drive mode. The gearbox is an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic with a torque converter rather than a dual-clutch unit.
The Competition arrives
The F90 went on sale for the 2018 model year. For 2019 BMW added the M5 Competition, with 617 hp, firmer engine mounts and stiffer suspension. The regular 600 hp car described here remained the more comfortable choice. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 3.2 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155 mph, or 190 mph (306 km/h) with the M Driver’s Package.
What it is like
The M5 can be very fast while also being a usable family saloon, with full rear seats and the normal 5 Series boot. A carbon-fibre roof was standard. Carbon-ceramic brakes were optional. The EPA rated it at 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway, or about 15.7 and 11.2 L/100km.
Buying one today
Running costs are high. Wide performance tyres wear quickly, and brake discs and pads are expensive. The twin-turbo V8 is complex and runs hot, so regular oil changes and a full service record matter. Check for track use and the condition of the differential and drive shafts on cars that have been modified for more power.
Rivals
Its direct rivals were the Mercedes-AMG E63 S 4MATIC+ and the Cadillac CTS-V. The Porsche Panamera 4S and Turbo offered a similar blend of space and pace.
