ABOUT THE 2013 BMW M5
The 2013 BMW M5 is the fifth-generation M5, based on the F10 5 Series saloon. It uses the S63 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 rated at 560 hp and 500 lb-ft, driving the rear wheels through an Active M Differential. This entry covers the version with the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (DCT); US buyers could also order a six-speed manual, a choice not offered in most other markets.
Second year of the turbo era
The F10 M5 went on sale for the 2012 model year and was the first M5 with turbocharging, replacing the high-revving V10 of the E60. The 2013 car carried on largely unchanged. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.2 seconds for the DCT model, with top speed limited to 155 mph, or higher with the optional M Driver’s Package.
What it is like
Compared with its predecessor, the F10 M5 offers far more torque low down and much easier everyday driving, though some critics felt the steering and the synthesised engine sound through the speakers made it less involving. Adjustable dampers, steering and throttle settings let it switch between comfortable cruiser and track-capable saloon.
Buying one today
Known weak points of the S63 family include oil consumption, valve stem seals and the wear of rod bearings on high-mileage engines, and the big brakes and tyres are costly to replace. Service history matters greatly.
