ABOUT THE 2018 BMW X3 XDRIVE30I
The 2018 BMW X3 xDrive30i marks the US launch year of the third-generation X3 (G01), a compact luxury SUV. It is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 248 hp and 258 lb-ft, with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive as standard.
An all-new X3
For 2018 the X3 was redesigned on BMW’s CLAR platform, growing slightly in length and wheelbase and losing some weight in the process. The cabin moved upmarket with a large central screen, optional digital instruments, gesture control and a broader range of driver-assistance systems. Like the X5, the US-market X3 is built at BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Where the xDrive30i sits
The xDrive30i was the mainstream engine at launch, sitting below the six-cylinder X3 M40i. Its turbocharged four-cylinder offers strong low-down torque and is well matched to the smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic. It replaced the previous generation’s xDrive28i, gaining power along the way.
Practicality
The G01 offers a usable rear seat for adults and a square, well-shaped boot, with split-folding rear seatbacks for longer loads. Its higher driving position and all-weather traction make it a popular family choice.
Buying one today
As an early example of a new generation, check that software updates and any service campaigns have been carried out. Commonly reported issues on the B46/B48 four-cylinder include oil and coolant leaks as cars age.
Rivals
The 2018 X3 competed with the Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC 300, Volvo XC60, Jaguar F-Pace, Porsche Macan and Alfa Romeo Stelvio.
