ABOUT THE 2013 BMW 335I XDRIVE

The 2013 BMW 335i xDrive is the all-wheel-drive six-cylinder sedan of the sixth-generation 3 Series (F30). It seats five and uses the N55 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, rated at 300 hp and 300 lb-ft. A six-speed manual was offered; this entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic.

New for 2013

The F30 sedan reached the US for the 2012 model year in rear-wheel-drive form, and xDrive versions of the 328i and 335i joined for 2013. The new car was larger than the E90, with a 2,810 mm wheelbase that freed up more rear legroom, and it introduced selectable driving modes and automatic engine start-stop. Sport, Luxury and Modern Lines let buyers pick different trim themes.

Economy and everyday use

The eight-speed automatic helped the 335i xDrive reach EPA ratings of 20 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, about 11.8 and 7.8 L/100km. The boot holds a useful amount for a compact sedan and the rear seats can fold on many cars. The steering is electrically assisted, which some found less communicative than the older hydraulic systems.

Known weak points

Common N55 concerns are oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks, the electric water pump and thermostat, and the plastic charge pipe. A full service history is worth having, as these engines dislike extended oil-change intervals.

Rivals

The 335i xDrive competed with the Audi S4, Mercedes-Benz C350, Infiniti G37x, Lexus IS 350 AWD and the new Cadillac ATS 3.6 AWD.
