ABOUT THE 2011 BMW 335I XDRIVE
The 2011 BMW 335i xDrive is the turbocharged, all-wheel-drive version of the E90 3 Series saloon. For 2011 it switched to the single-turbo 3.0-litre N55 inline-six, rated at 300 hp and 300 lb-ft. This entry covers the version with the six-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was also offered.
A new engine for 2011
The 335i had used the twin-turbo N54 since 2007. For 2011 BMW replaced it with the N55, which uses one twin-scroll turbocharger together with Valvetronic variable valve lift, giving the same peak power with torque spread over a broad rev range. The saloon had already been facelifted for 2009, so the 2011 car combines the updated E90 look with the newer engine. This was one of the final years of the E90, with the F30 saloon arriving for 2012.
What it is like
The N55 delivers strong, smooth acceleration, and xDrive adds traction in poor conditions with only a small effect on agility. The cabin seats four adults comfortably, with a usable boot, and the optional sports package adds supportive seats and firmer suspension.
Buying one today
The N55 is generally considered more reliable than the N54, but commonly reported faults include electric water pump failure, oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks, and a plastic charge pipe that can crack, especially on tuned cars. On xDrive models, the transfer case actuator and front axle components should be checked.
