ABOUT THE 2009 BMW 335I XDRIVE
The 2009 BMW 335i xDrive is the all-wheel-drive version of the fifth-generation 3 Series saloon (E90). It uses BMW’s N54 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six, rated at 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, with xDrive sending power to all four wheels. This entry covers the version with the six-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was also offered.
Facelift and a new name for 2009
The 2009 model year brought the E90 saloon’s mid-life update, with reshaped headlights and tail lights, revised bumpers and, on cars with navigation, a new-generation iDrive system with a simpler controller and shortcut buttons. At the same time BMW dropped the old “xi” badging in North America, so the car sold as the 335xi in 2007 and 2008 became the 335i xDrive. Underneath, the formula continued: a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system that varies the split between the axles through an electronically controlled clutch. The twin-turbo N54 remained in the saloon for 2009 and 2010 before the single-turbo N55 replaced it.

The N54 is strong and easily tuned, but it has a well-documented list of weak points. Commonly reported issues include failing high-pressure fuel pumps, leaking or sticking fuel injectors, wastegate rattle from the turbochargers, electric water pump failures and oil leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets. Service history matters more than mileage on these cars. All-wheel-drive models add a transfer case that should be checked for noises or hesitation when manoeuvring.
Rivals
In 2009 the 335i xDrive competed with the Audi A4 3.2 quattro, the Infiniti G37x and the Mercedes-Benz C350 4MATIC, although the BMW’s turbocharged six gave it a clear advantage in mid-range pulling power.
