ABOUT THE 2012 BMW 750LI XDRIVE

The 2012 BMW 750Li xDrive is the long-wheelbase, all-wheel-drive V8 version of the fifth-generation 7 Series (F02), a full-size luxury saloon. Its N63 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 is rated at 400 hp and 450 lb-ft (about 610 Nm), and power reaches all four wheels through a six-speed automatic.

The final pre-facelift year

The F01/F02 7 Series launched for the 2009 model year, and xDrive became available for the 750i and 750Li from 2010. The 2012 model year was the last before BMW’s mid-life update: for 2013 the 750Li moved to an eight-speed automatic and gained a more powerful version of the V8. That makes the 2012 car the last 750Li with the six-speed gearbox.

Space and comfort

The long-wheelbase body adds roughly 14 cm of rear legroom over the standard car, which is why the Li models dominated US sales. Options included rear comfort seats, a rear entertainment system and Night Vision. Ride quality is soft and quiet, and the twin-turbo V8 provides strong, effortless performance.

Buying one today

The early N63 engine has a widely reported reputation for heavy oil consumption, failing valve stem seals, fuel injector problems and timing chain wear; BMW issued service campaigns that addressed several of these. Air suspension, electronics and heat-related damage in the engine bay are other areas to check carefully before purchase.

Rivals

The 750Li xDrive competed with the Mercedes-Benz S550 4MATIC, Audi A8 L 4.2 quattro, Lexus LS 460 L AWD and Jaguar XJL.
