End of the line
Introduced for the 2005 model year to replace the 456M, the 612 was named after the coachbuilder Sergio Scaglietti, whose firm built many classic Ferrari bodies. Production ended in 2011, and its successor was the four-wheel-drive FF shooting brake, which arrived for 2012. A 2011 car is therefore one of the last and most developed examples.
Engineering
The 612 was built around an aluminium spaceframe and aluminium body, with the V12 mounted behind the front axle and the gearbox at the rear for better weight distribution. Its long 2,950 mm wheelbase gives genuine space for two adults in the rear seats on shorter trips, and the boot is usable for luggage, which made the 612 one of the more practical Ferraris of its time.
Buying one today
As with other Ferraris of the period, the F1 gearbox clutch wear and hydraulic system deserve checking, and sticky interior surfaces are commonly reported. Complex electrics and expensive parts make a complete service history and a specialist inspection important.
