ABOUT THE 2006 FERRARI 612 SCAGLIETTI

The 2006 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive 2+2 grand tourer with two doors and four seats. Its 5.7-litre (5,748 cc) naturally aspirated V12 produces 532 hp and 434 lb-ft (588 Nm), mounted behind the front axle line, with the gearbox at the rear for better weight distribution. This entry covers the version with Ferrari’s six-speed F1 automated manual; a conventional six-speed manual was also offered.

Background

The 612 replaced the 456M as Ferrari’s four-seat GT and was named after the Modena coachbuilder Sergio Scaglietti. Its spaceframe chassis and body are made of aluminium, and the long 2,950 mm wheelbase gives genuine space for rear passengers on shorter trips. Production ran from 2004 to 2011, so a 2006 car is an early example, built before later additions such as the One-to-One personalisation programme and the electrochromic glass roof option.

What it is like

Ferrari quoted a top speed of 196 mph (315 km/h), yet the 612 was designed as a comfortable long-distance car, with a usable boot and a calmer character than the two-seat 575M and 599. The styling, including the scalloped sides that recall the 375 MM, divided opinion when new.

Buying one today

Running costs are high. Commonly reported concerns include wear of the F1 gearbox clutch and its hydraulic pump, sticky interior surfaces, and the cost of routine cambelt services. A full Ferrari dealer or specialist service history is essential.

Rivals

Rivals included the Aston Martin DB9, the Bentley Continental GT and the Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG.
