The 2019 BMW X3 M40i is the performance flagship of the third-generation X3 (G01) in its second US model year. It is powered by BMW’s B58 turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six, rated at 355 hp and 365 lb-ft (500 Nm), with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.6 seconds.
Where it sits
The M40i was the first M Performance model in the X3 range and sat above the four-cylinder xDrive30i. It brought M Sport brakes, adaptive M suspension, a rear-biased tuning of the xDrive system, plus a sports exhaust. For 2019 it was the fastest X3 on sale; the full X3 M arrived for the 2020 model year.
Practicality
Like other G01 models built for North America, the M40i was assembled in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
