ABOUT THE 2019 AUDI E-TRON
The 2019 Audi e-tron is the launch model year of Audi’s first series-production battery-electric car, a five-seat midsize SUV. Sold in the US as the e-tron 55 quattro, it uses two electric motors, one on each axle, giving electric all-wheel drive. Normal output is 355 hp and 414 lb-ft (561 Nm), rising to 402 hp and 490 lb-ft in the temporary boost mode, with a single-speed transmission.
Battery, range and charging
The e-tron uses a 95 kWh (gross) lithium-ion battery mounted under the floor. The EPA rated its range at 204 miles (about 328 km), modest compared with some rivals, partly because Audi reserved a larger buffer of battery capacity to protect long-term battery health. DC fast charging at up to 150 kW was a strong point at the time of launch.
What it is like
The e-tron feels much like a conventional Audi SUV, with a quiet, well-finished cabin, adaptive air suspension as standard and the dual-touchscreen MMI layout. It is heavy, at well over 2,500 kg, but the low-mounted battery helps keep it stable. It was built at Audi’s plant in Brussels, Belgium.
Buying one today
Early 2019 cars were recalled over a seal in the battery wiring harness that could allow moisture into the battery; confirm that this and any software updates have been completed. A battery health check is worthwhile on any used electric car.
Rivals
The 2019 e-tron competed with the Tesla Model X and the Jaguar I-Pace.
