The 2020 BMW X3 M40i is the performance flagship of the regular third-generation X3 range (G01), sitting below the dedicated X3 M. What changed for 2020
The 2020 model year brought two notable additions to the X3 line-up: the plug-in hybrid xDrive30e and the first full X3 M and X3 M Competition. That left the M40i as the middle ground between the four-cylinder xDrive30i and the far more aggressive M models. The engine output remained at 355 hp until the 2022 facelift raised it.
What it is like
The M40i adds M Sport brakes, firmer sports suspension tuning and a sports exhaust, giving it a sharper feel than the standard X3 without the stiff ride of the X3 M. The cabin and boot are the same as other X3s, so it remains a practical five-seat family SUV with a rear bench split 40/20/40.

The B58 has a good reputation for reliability. Commonly reported items include coolant leaks from the expansion tank or plastic coolant pipes, and oil filter housing gasket leaks at higher mileage. Brake and tyre wear are higher than on lesser X3s.
