The 2019 BMW 740e xDrive is the plug-in hybrid version of the sixth-generation 7 Series (G12). It combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor built into the eight-speed automatic, giving a combined 322 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm). xDrive all-wheel drive is standard, and the EPA rates its electric-only range at 14 miles (about 23 km).
Where 2019 sits
The 740e xDrive iPerformance joined the G12 range for 2017 as BMW’s first plug-in 7 Series. 2019 was the final year of this pre-facelift version: for 2020 the 7 Series received its mid-life update, and the plug-in model was renamed 745e xDrive, switching to a six-cylinder engine with more power and a larger battery.
How it works
The lithium-ion battery sits under the rear seat, and the car can run on electric power alone for short journeys or blend the engine and motor for stronger acceleration. Drive modes let the driver save battery charge for later in a trip. Charging from a standard home or public AC supply takes a few hours. The boot is somewhat smaller than in petrol 7 Series models because of the hybrid hardware.
