2018 BMW 740e xDrive
The 2018 BMW 740e xDrive is a plug-in hybrid sedan. It has a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 322 hp (240 kW), with an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
ABOUT THE 2018 BMW 740E XDRIVE
The 2018 BMW 740e xDrive iPerformance is the plug-in hybrid version of the sixth-generation 7 Series (G12), sold in the US in long-wheelbase form. It pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic, for a combined system output of 322 hp and 369 lb-ft. All-wheel drive is standard.
Where it sits in the range
The G12 7 Series launched for the 2016 model year, and the 740e followed as BMW’s first plug-in luxury saloon. The 2018 model was its second year on sale, with the car largely carried over. It sat alongside the petrol 740i, 750i and M760i, and was later replaced by the six-cylinder 745e when the 7 Series was facelifted for 2020.
Electric range and efficiency
A lithium-ion battery of about 9.2 kWh sits beneath the rear seat, giving an EPA-rated electric range of about 14 miles (23 km). That is enough for short commutes on electricity alone, while the petrol engine takes over for longer trips. The battery installation does reduce boot space compared with the petrol models.
Buying one today
As with any early plug-in hybrid, battery health and the charging equipment should be checked, and a full service history is important. The 7 Series’ air suspension, complex electronics and comfort features can be costly to repair, so a pre-purchase inspection by a BMW specialist is worthwhile.
Rivals
Its closest plug-in rival in 2018 was the Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, while the Volvo S90 T8 offered a smaller plug-in luxury option. Conventional rivals included the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8 and Lexus LS.
